About the ingredients:
Beeswax acts as an emulsifier and a surfactant to form protective barrier on the surface of the skin. This barrier provides a film of protection against irritants while still allowing the skin to breathe. The Mayo Clinic recommends using a lip balm that contains beeswax to reduce your chances of developing chapped lips.
Coconut oil is high in medium chain fatty acids or triglycerides, which keep skin smooth to the touch and retain the moisture content of skin. It also contains capric, caprylic and lauric acids, which are not very different from the medium chain fatty acids, but have strong disinfectant and antimicrobial properties. These help protect from microbial infections that can enter through the pores. The proteins in coconut oil contribute to cellular health and tissue repair; for any damaged cells on or near the skin, a healthy of flow of proteins guarantees their replacement at a normal rate. 100 grams of coconut oil also contains about 0.1 mg of vitamin-E, thus enhancing it skin-nourishing properties. The benefits of vitamin E in skin care are well known, and can be seen below.
Cocoa butter, made from the extracted oil of the cocoa bean, is a skin-loving wealth of fatty acids and antioxidants. It prevents dryness and peeling, healing cracked and dry winter skin as well as skin that’s been in the summer sun. It’s easily absorbed into the skin and stays locked in for hours. In addition, it’s an emollient, meaning it adds a protective layer of hydration. Containing antioxidant compounds called cocoa mass polyphenols, cocoa butter can also help diminish signs of aging as well as soothe dermatitis and rashes. Plus, it smells like chocolate—enough said.
Sunflower seed oil is rich in linoleic acid. These essential fatty acids can help maintain the skin barrier and decrease transepidermal water loss. Several studies have also suggested that sunflower seed oil has anti-inflammatory properties. Linoleic acid is the major lipid that converts to arachidonic acid, which leads to prostaglandin E2, an inflammatory modulator.
Vitamin E oil is a powerful antioxidant. It is essential for healthy skin growth, repair of wear and tear on the skin, keeping skin smooth, protecting it and preventing premature aging. It is nourishing for all skin types and prolongs the shelf life of the product.
Peppermint essential oil contains menthol, which creates a cooling and soothing sensation. Peppermint also boosts circulation to the affected area, reducing any inflammation. And it makes this lip balm smell like mint chocolate chip ice cream.
